What is a Wireless Charger?

A wireless charger works by using electromagnetic fields generated between a charging pad and the portable device. An electric current runs from a wall outlet to the wireless charging pad where it energizes an electrical coil. Electrical current flowing through a coil creates a magnetic field. When another electrical coil is placed in that magnetic field, the process happens in reverse, and the electrical coil creates an electrical current to be used by the portable device. Wireless charging, also known as inductive charging, is a fairly new innovation first offered to consumers around 2009.


Consumer electronics and mobile phone technologies have come a long way over the last two decades, including the introduction of the wireless charger. The wireless charger is a handy product that allows mobile electronic devices to be charged without the necessity of wires or plugs. Wireless chargers can even conveniently charge several devices at once, which saves time and electricity.


Wireless chargers, often called power mats, use a technology called magnetic induction to transfer electrical energy from wall power sockets to electronic devices. Electricity is carried along magnetic waves into the wireless charger and then transmitted to electronic devices through wireless receptor pads. Instead of physically attaching directly into each unit with electrically conducting wires or plugs, static energy is sent through the air to power and charge up batteries.

Wireless electricity technology, or “Witricity,” was developed by a team of researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007. However, being able to transmit electricity through the air is not new technology. It was actually a scientific concept introduced by inventor and electrical engineer, Nikola Tesla, in the early twentieth century. Wireless charger capability is now made more possible due to practical applications of this science, recent developments and the demand for it by consumers.


Due to the influx of other wireless technologies specifically for consumers who wish hands-free operation of electronic or mobile devices, the wireless charger is becoming available for use by all. Companies that carry mobile devices now also offer universal charger units that employ the wireless charger technology. For many consumers, this increases access to fully charged cell phones, personal data accessories and gaming equipment.


It is important to note that all wireless chargers do not power all devices equally effectively. With wireless electricity technology still in its new phases, some electronics devices will not accept the charge produced by wireless chargers, despite being called universal. In some cases, wireless chargers will cause consumers to update their existing handheld devices or buy adapters capable of transmitting the electrical energy wirelessly to some devices.


A wireless charger system can be purchased for regular consumer use at most electronic device retailers. Because the wireless charger uses less electricity to charge multiple devices, it is a convenient way of handling the power needs for a variety of consumer electronics. In the future, wireless chargers may be used to power laptops, computer networks, and even transmit electricity without cables and wires to vehicles, homes and businesses.

 

The Benefits of a Wireless Charger
The most obvious benefit of a wireless charger is the elimination of charging cables and adapters. This reduces clutter and makes charging very easy and nearly hands free. A user simply needs to place the device on the charging pad without having to find the right connection.


Having a charging area without cables also becomes safer due to a reduced risk of getting shocked by a faulty cable or tripping on a dangling wire.


Mobile phones, digital cameras and other electronic devices have made everyday life much more convenient and enjoyable than ever before. One not so enjoyable side effect of personal electronics is keeping their batteries charged. Not all chargers are compatible with all devices, and owners with multiple devices could find their charging locations a tangled mess. One solution to escaping this web of cables is to create a universal battery charger by using a wireless charging pad system.


The best wireless charger should have the following features
The most important feature buyers should look at when considering a wireless charger is; 1) will the charger support the devices they want to use with it? Standard device batteries cannot use wireless charging stations on their own. In order for wireless induction to work, the device needs a special battery that has the electromagnetic coil built in, or an adapter that plugs into the devices power port. 2) Another key feature the power output of the charger. The more amperage the charger can output, the faster it will be able to charge portable devices.


The future of wireless chargers
Most wireless chargers available today can only charge devices that are touching, or are in very close contact with the charging station. Future inductive chargers will be able to charge devices at a further distance such as being able to send a charging current throughout the area of a room or office.


Automobile manufactures will soon be offering chargers built in to the cup holder and middle consoles of cars so that users can charge devices wireless effortlessly while on the go. Researchers are even working on large scale chargers that can replenish the batteries of electrical cars without the need to plug them in. New furnishings are being built with inductive charging circuits integrated throughout the entire surface of household items like tables and desks, potentially turning every surface in the home or office into a charging station.
